The ominous black dog is a silent spirit that walks the lonely roads and paths in the British Isles. It is best never to walk alone on such roads but a companion will not guarantee protection from the black dog since this spirit can appear to one traveler but not the other. The kelpie is a frightful monster that lurks in Scottish rivers. Able to change their shape, the kelpie usually takes on the form of either a hairy human or a beautiful, amiable horse. When a passerby comes to walk by a kelpie’s river the kelpie will attempt to drag the weary traveler into the river to devour them. In the form of a man, the kelpie will wrap its arms around the poor person and drown them. In the form of a friendly horse the kelpie will trick the traveler onto their back to relieve their aching feet and leap into the river dragging them down into the depths to eat them. But there is a way to escape a kelpie. If the unwilling rider is clever enough to bring a bridle and place it on the monster then the kelpie will be under their command, though keeping the kelpie in such a state is inadvisable as they will likely curse their owner. One can detect the presence of kelpies by their wails that are heard before a coming storm.

Harpies are Greek wind spirits of the storm. These swift creatures are known to snatch people and objects away from the earth and carry them off to somewhere unknown, never to be seen again. Sometimes they torment people while dragging them away or punish people by stealing from them, as they did with King Phineus. Either beautiful maidens with wings or hideous half-bird crones these creatures are known throughout all of Greece for their great speed.

The basilisk, also known as a cockatrice, is a foul creature that roams throughout Europe. Born from an egg laid by a rooster and hatched by a toad the basilisk is exceedingly dangerous. The basilisk kills with a single look, its breath withers and burns the landscape, and its venom is so poisonous that it kills not only the bitten but the other creatures touching the unfortunate victim. But the basilisk has two major weaknesses. The weasel is immune to the basilisk and will fight it to the death and the very crow of a cock will kill the basilisk where it stands.

Thunderbirds are powerful spirits found throughout most of North America. Accounts of these beings vary depending on the people who tell of them; sometimes the thunderbird is a singular being while other times it is a species. It may be dangerous or helpful. Sometimes it can take on human form by removing its beak like a mask and live among humans for a spell, even becoming ancestors to a group of people. But there are common traits of the thunderbird. Similar in shape to the eagle, the beating of its wings creates the rolling thunder and pulls the clouds together. Lightning flashes from its eyes or beak. And these thunderbirds could influence or control the rains.

The kitsune is a Japanese fox spirit. These spirits are often seen with multiple tails, the most powerful having nine tails. It is said that with every century they have lived they gain another tail. Kitsune temperaments vary, some being good, helpful, and associated with the fox god Inari. Others are tricksters and lead people into misfortune. Some powers of the kitsune include the ability to possess people, transform into a human shape (though they are always revealed by their shadow or reflection which shows their fox form), and can create a fire called kitsunebi that they use lead people off the paths at night into the dangerous unknown.

Cerberus is Hades’s three-headed guard dog to the underworld. This fierce creature watches over the dead souls that enter and stops the living from wandering where they don’t belong. But Cerberus can be tricked and some ancient heroes have gotten by. Orpheus played a song so sweet that it soothed the proverbial beast and he walked past the dog. And Heracles for his last labor dragged the dog out of the underworld.
